How to submit a report

Send a Mt. Rainier visibility report in about five seconds on the web or in the iOS app. No account required.

Reporting is meant to be a five-second, one-thumb job. Cold fingers, bright sun, mid-trail: all fine.

No account needed

Reporting works anonymously. The first time you visit, your device gets a random anonymous ID so you can report right away. See anonymous vs. account.

On the web

Open the app

Head to app.isthemountainout.com.

Pick what you see

Choose the option that matches the mountain from where you're standing. Not sure which? See what the options mean.

Share your location

Your browser will ask for permission. We use it to place your report on the map, and your browser turns it into a hexagon (roughly 130 m across) before the report is sent, so we don't receive your coordinates. See location privacy.

Hit submit

Tap the share button and you're done. Want to add a picture? That takes a free account. See photos.

In the iOS app

The app does the same thing, natively. You choose one of the five states, the app takes a one-shot location fix, and you hold the submit button to send it. Holding avoids accidental taps. You can optionally attach a photo. See the iOS app guide.

If you're offline, the app can queue your report and send it when you're back on a connection.

Browser says it can't get your location?

If you previously denied the location prompt (for us or for another site), your browser will keep saying no until you change it. Open your browser's site settings, allow location for this site, and try again. Both iOS and Android browsers let you set this per site.

Hit a limit?

There's a cooldown between reports and a daily cap, which is how we keep the map honest. See how reports are processed.
